There are always in life countless tendencies for good and for evil, and each succeeding generation sees some of these tendencies strengthened and some weakened; nor is it by any means always, alas! that the tendencies for evil are weakened and those for good strengthened. but during the last few decades there certainly have been some notable changes for good in boy life. the great growth in the love of athletic sports, for instance, while fraught with danger if it becomes one-sided and unhealthy, has beyond all question had an excellent effect in increased manliness.

We cannot choose how many years we will live, but we can choose how much life those years will have. we cannot control the beauty of our face, but we can control the expression on it. we cannot control life's difficult moments but we can choose to make life less difficult. we cannot control the negative atmosphere of the world, but we can control the atmosphere of our minds. too often we try to choose and control things we cannot. too seldom we choose to control what we can ... our attitude.

Many times when people have a vision, they think in terms of a big vision - i want to take my city for christ. but the problem with many pastors and this type of vision is this: they haven't developed the strategy to fulfill that vision. a pastor preaches a dream or vision to his/her people, they get excited for a week, a month, or a couple of months, but there is no strategy, planning, or process to fulfill that vision.

Certainly here in the u.s., we've had fundamentalist movements that have taken very critical and hostile attitudes toward immigration and the assimilation of immigrants into our society and culture. so these tendencies are fairly universal. the problem is what if they get out of hand and become the dominant factor in a society, which can only lead to the oppression of minorities or even to war with neighboring societies with differing cultures. that's why it seems to me it's important to try to keep these tendencies toward extremism under control.
Attitude War Taken
I think what happens in a religious life is that we have those experiences of affirmation and that one starts to live a christian life or a jewish life or a muslim life or a buddhist life, by affirming that affirmation each day. each day you say 'yes' to that yes. so the life of being a christian for example, is always a life of double affirmation, that you each day say 'yes' to those counter-experiences of saying 'yes', even when you're not experiencing them at that time, you're remaining loyal to that experience.
