Everyone feels awkward, everyone feels uncomfortable, everyone gets older, everyone gets lonely, everyone gets sick, everyone eventually dies. you’re at the aspen ideas fest, and you have these really smart, really accomplished people who pretend like they’ve somehow figured out a way to bypass the human condition. we live in this culture where there are so many things that want us to pretend that we’re not truly human.

I like the stars. it's the illusion of permanence, i think. i mean, they're always flaring up and caving in and going out. but from here, i can pretend...i can pretend that things last. i can pretend that lives last longer than moments. gods come, and gods go. mortals flicker and flash and fade. worlds don't last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. but i can pretend.

People were paid lots of money to make stupid decisions, people in big banks, and when people are paid to be stupid they'll be stupid. the question was, did they know they were being stupid or were they just stupid? i think you need to take it on a case by case basis. there was some sinister activity, but i think by and by it was people being incentivised to do the wrong thing.

Every form has its own meaning. every man creates his meaning and form and goal. why is it so important - what others have done? why does it become sacred by the mere fact of not being your own? why is anyone and everyone right - so long as it's not yourself? why does the number of those others take the place of truth? why is truth made a mere matter of arithmetic - and only of addition at that? why is everything twisted out of all sense to fit everything else? there must be some reason. i don't know. i've never known it. i'd like to understand.

Learn all you can, don't be lazy. nothing's worse than being stupid. being broke is bad, but being stupid is what's really bad. and what's really really bad is being broke and stupid. nothing's much worse than that. unless you're sick. sick, broke and stupid, that’s about as far as you can fall unless you're ugly. surely that would be the ultimate; ugly, sick, broke and stupid.

Having a hummer is stupid. it's stupid to waste that much gas. it's stupid to waste that much money on gas. it's stupid to parade your insecurities on public roads. hummers are stupid-looking.
