I have a specific set of, i have a specific sort of negative energies to deal with that might be specific to me, but it definitely something that all artists have to deal with at one point or another. but i think for me, it's just maybe more specific.

I think if a young person is passionate about something specific, he or she should follow their passion. you look at bill gates or steve jobs, all of these successes in silicon valley, these people have had passion in a specific area and have therefore succeeded. college isn't for everyone. if you don't have that passion or that specific focus in mind, i believe you should go to university and get an education.

Maybe it’s my own fault. maybe i led you to believe it was easy when it wasn’t. maybe i made you think my highlights started at the free throw line, and not in the gym. maybe i made you think that every shot i took was a game winner. that my game was built on flash, and not fire. maybe it’s my fault that you didn’t see that failure gave me strength; that my pain was my motivation. maybe i led you to believe that basketball was a god given gift, and not something i worked for every single day of my life. maybe i destroyed the game. or maybe you’re just making excuses.

When i need to take a side, i write a newspaper article and i tell my government, "you should not do that, you should do this." they don't listen to me, but i've been doing this for sixty years now. but, when i write a novel, i am not in that business. i follow the way people change. i follow the way people, who are very antagonized to one another become very close to one another and vice-versa. sometimes i follow the way people who are intimately close to each other move apart.

If i had been a different sort of person, maybe less impressionable, less intense, less fearful, less utterly dependent upon the perceptions of others - maybe then i would not have bought the cultural party line that thinness is the be-all and end-all of goals. maybe if my family had not been in utter chaos most of the time, maybe if my parents were a little better at dealing with their own lives maybe if i'd gotten help sooner, or if i'd gotten different help, maybe if i didn't so fiercely cherish my secret, or if i were not such a good liar, or were not quite so empty inside... maybe.

The follow your dreams thing is really important because so many people are railroaded into taking other paths by their family, their friends, people who should be supportive going, 'what are you talking about?' even just seemingly regular career paths, but if it's not what people expect for you they kind of react funny.
