You've probably heard about the theory of steam-engine time - that even after the steam engine had been invented, it had to wait until people were ready to make use of it. the same thing happens in literary circles. the truth is, i'm not terribly interested in victorian times; i'm interested in victorian writers. i'm interested in most eras of history, but not the victorian era especially. i was interested in the john franklin expedition. i was interested in these last five weird years of dickens' life. and i just have to take the age that comes with all that when i write about it.

Patriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. the pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries. it wants to be, and proclaims itself to be, "the greatest," but greatness is not required of a country; only goodness is.

Real writers-that is, capital w writers-rarely make much money. their biggest reward is the occasional reader's response.... commentators-in-print voicing big fat opinions-you might call us small w writers-get considerably more feedback than writers. the letters i personally find most flattering are not the very rare ones that speak well of my editorials, but the occasional reader who wants to know who writes them. i always happily assume the letter-writers is implying that the editorials are so good that i couldn't have written them myself.
Real Writing Letters
A comprehensive doctrine, either religious or secular, aspires to cover all of life. i mean, if it's a religious doctrine, it talks about our relation to god and the universe; it has an ordering of all the virtues, not only political virtues but moral virtues as well, including the virtues of private life, and the rest. now we may feel philosophically that it doesn't really cover everything, but it aims to cover everything, and a secular doctrine does also.
Religious Mean Political
It's a time when a lot of principle virtues are being tested. do we still believe in the truth? do we still believe in empathy? do we still believe the protection of the weakest among us? these are yes or no questions, but the means of communication is all tied up with those virtues and you can't abandon those virtues as you pursue them.
