The Police Ombudsman has discovered an officer didn’t act with “sensitivity” when he intervened at a Troubles memorial occasion throughout Covid restrictions.
The incident occurred outside Sean Graham’s bookmakers on the Ormeau Street in Belfast in 2021.
Individuals had gathered to mark the twenty ninth anniversary of the murders of 5 individuals in a loyalist gun assault.
The ombudsman’s workplace investigated a criticism from Mark Sykes, a survivor of the assault, who was arrested and put into handcuffs.
He was launched 90 minutes later.
The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) had beforehand determined no assault charges must be introduced towards law enforcement officials.
The ombudsman, Marie Anderson, launched particulars of her investigation on Monday.
Mrs Anderson stated: “Given restrictions on gatherings on the time, I’m glad that there was affordable justification for the PSNI to have attended the scene.
“Nevertheless, after examination of all proof, I used to be of the view the arresting police officer had not responded according to an order to deal with the gathering with sensitivity.”
In a press release, PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher stated the drive accepts suggestions made by the ombudsman.
