Easy to see that naught save sorrow could bring a man to such a view of things. and yet a sorrow for which there can be no help is no sorrow. it is some dark sister traveling in sorrow's clothing. men do not turn from god so easily you see. not so easily. deep in each man is the knowledge that something knows of his existence. something knows, and cannot be fled nor hid from. to imagine otherwise is to imagine the unspeakable. it was never that this man ceased to believe in god. no. it was rather that he came to believe terrible things of him.

Recently, one friend asked me, "how can i force myself to smile when i am filled with sorrow? it isn't natural." i told her she must be able to smile to her sorrow, because we are more than our sorrow. a human being is like a television set with millions of channels. if we turn the buddha on, we are the buddha. if we turn sorrow on then we are sorrow. if we turn a smile on, we really are the smile. we can not let just one channel dominate us. we have the seed of everything in us, and we have to seize the situation in our hand, to recover our own sovereignty.
Hands Sorrow Able
Ought we not, from time to time, open ourselves up to cosmic sadness? ... give your sorrow all the space and shelter in yourself that is its due, for if everyone bears his grief honestly and courageously, the sorrow that now fills the world will abate. but if you do not clear a decent shelter for your sorrow, and instead reserve most of the space inside you for hatred and thoughts of revenge-from which new sorrows will be born for others-then sorrow will never cease in this world and will multiply.
Revenge Grief Sadness
So often, we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down in here. i'm not happy. i don't know what's wrong. if i just had another job, i could be happy. if i just get married, i would be happy. well if i just wasn't married, i would be happy. well, if i just had some kids, i'll be happy. i'll be happy when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. if i had a bigger house, i would be happy. well, i got a big house. now if i just had a maid to clean, i'd be happy. well, now if i just had a maid i could get along with better, i'd be happy.
Happiness Jobs Growing Up
I think we all mistake certain things for happiness. i think we mistake comfort for happiness and we mistake pleasure for happiness, and entertainment for happiness, when really these are just things we use as proxies for our happiness. we use them to cheer us up or try and achieve brief happiness, when really happiness is something much more profound and long lasting and exists within us.
Cheer Mistake Thinking
Joy is hidden in sorrow and sorrow in joy. if we try to avoid sorrow at all costs, we may never taste joy, and if we are suspicious of ecstasy, agony can never reach us either. joy and sorrow are the parents of our spiritual growth.
