When i first prepared this particular talk... i realized that my usual approach is usually critical. that is, a lot of the things that i do, that most people do, are because they hate something somebody else has done, or they hate that something hasn't been done. and i realized that informed criticism has completely been done in by the web. because the web has produced so much uninformed criticism. it's kind of a gresham's law-bad money drives the good money out of circulation. bad criticism drives good criticism out of circulation. you just can't criticize anything.

Narcissism is actually a clever guise adopted to mask its exact opposite, which is a deep well of self-loathing, a well of low self-esteem, rather than high self-esteem. this helps explain why narcissists are so sensitive to criticism, why narcissists tend to break into outrage if they're criticized, because their self-esteem is actually much more brittle than it seems, and once they're challenged, that mask falls apart.
Clever Self Esteem Fall
I had a lot of time to myself, and i would listen to a lot of music, mostly music that i knew fairly well and had a relationship with. and i'd think, well, what is it that i've never been able to do that this person or people are able to do with this song? why haven't i been able to do it, and what can they do that i wish i could do? and then i'd try to do that. i'd start each day getting into the songs, and i'd think about how i might get closer to this music that i love, but haven't been able to make before.
