Aside from higher considerations, charity often operates as a vastly wise and prudent principle-a great safeguard to its possessor. men have committed murder for jealousy's sake, and anger's sake, and hatred's sake, and selfishness' sake, and spiritual pride's sake; but no man that ever i heard of, ever committed a diabolical murder for sweet charity's sake. mere self-interest, then, if no better motive can be enlisted, should, especially with high-tempered men, prompt all beings to charity and philanthropy.

Our technological society has no longer any place in it for wisdom that seeks truth for its own sake, that seeks the fullness of being, that seeks to rest in an intuition of the very ground of all being. without wisdom, the apparent opposition of action and contemplation, of work and rest, of involvement and detachment, can never be resolved.

Like all predatory or parasitic institutions, its first instinct is that of self-preservation. all its enterprises are directed first towards preserving its own life, and, second, towards increasing its own power and enlarging the scope of its own activity. for the sake of this it will, and regularly does, commit any crime which circumstances make expedient.

The beginning is never the clear, precise end of a thread, the beginning is a long, painfully slow process that requires time and patience in order to find out in which direction it is heading, a process that feels its way along the path ahead like a blind man the beginning is just the beginning, what came before is nigh on worthless.

Freedom is necessary for two reasons. it's necessary for the individual, because the individual, no matter how good the society is, every individual has hopes, fears, ambitions, creative urges, that transcend the purposes of his society. therefore we have a long history of freedom, where people try to extricate themselves from tyranny for the sake of art, for the sake of science, for the sake of religion, for the sake of the conscience of the individual - this freedom is necessary for the individual.

The problem of reconciling human suffering with the existence of a god who loves, is only insoluble so long as we attach a trivial meaning to the word "love", and look on things as if man were the centre of them. man is not the centre. god does not exist for the sake of man. man does not exist for his own sake. "thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." we were made not primarily that we may love god (though we were made for that too) but that god may love us, that we may become objects in which the divine love may rest "well pleased".
