Twitter is the only brand of social media that i have ever taken to at all. i like the feeling of having my perception of the world expanded daily, 24/7, by being able to monitor the reactions of 100-and-some people throughout the world that i personally follow so i have some sense of who they are. there has never really been anything like that before, at least in terms of the digestible 140-character bandwidth that twitter is based on. i am able to wake up, open twitter, and sort of glance across the psychic state of the planet.

It's certainly something we haven't seen before in terms of a fully commercial global brand - really a family of brands - not just trump but also ivanka, who has a sub-brand. we've never seen this before. we've had presidents in financial conflicts of interest before, but this phenomenon where a sitting president image avatar is out there selling golf courses and condominiums, even as he is in office and having the value of his personal brand inflated dramatically by fact of his being president, is new territory.

The media are used to being able to control the agenda of both their friends and their enemies, their buddies and their opponents, and trump doesn't play by their rules because trump is not afraid of them. and trump knows that he doesn't need them. that's the big equalizer. unlike most republicans who think they can't get anywhere without at least some favorable treatment in the media or at least less criticism from the media, trump doesn't need the media. he's got his twitter account and he's got his rallies.

Social media is a way to make communication easier. obviously some people misunderstand it, some people take it personally, and some people are in a constant fight to grow their engagement. they even become obsessed. they feel like they need to be popular on social media. the most important thing is: you've got to be secure in yourself. in order to have influence on other people, you've got to know who you are, first of all. the reason i get happy when i get more engagement is because that means i did something right in terms of my audience enjoying my content.
