When we say, "i take refuge in the buddha," we should also understand that "the buddha takes refuge in me," because without the second part the first part is not complete. the buddha needs us for awakening, understanding, and love to be real things and not just concepts. they must be real things that have real effects on life. whenever i say, "i take refuge in the buddha," i hear "the buddha takes refuge in me."

Are soft-hearted people handicapped in business? you have heard a businessman say of someone else, he's all right, but he's too soft-hearted.... to be soft-hearted may be handicapping, in a sense. but on the whole, a soft heart is to be preferred to a hard heart. hard-hearted, severe, dominating giants sometimes manage to get further and to amass more money. but they get less genuine joy out of life.... it is the hard-boiled employer, not the soft-hearted species, that incites most of our strikes and does most to endanger the harmonious progress of democracy.

If grief or anger arises, let there be grief or anger. this is the buddha in all forms,sun buddha, moon buddha, happy buddha, sad buddha. it is the universe offering all things to awaken and open our heart.

Whenever learners or those beyond learning awaken the mind, for the first time they plant one buddha-nature. working with the four elements and five clusters, if they practice sincerely they attain enlightenment. working with plants, trees, fences and walls, if they practice sincerely they will attain enlightenment. this is because the four elements and five clusters and plants, trees, fences and walls are fellow students; because they are of the same essence, because they are the same mind and the same life, because they are the same body and the same mechanism.

When i said that i am the buddha, the christ, the lord maitreya, and more, it was not a question of superiority or inferiority. i added that phrase 'and more' very carefully, because i knew that people had a very limited understanding of the buddha and the christ, and hence if i said: 'i am the christ, the buddha', they would limit that reality to their own conceptions of the buddha or the christ, and life has no limit.
