Awkwardness gives me great comfort. i've never been cool, but i've felt cool. i've been in the cool place, but i wasn't really cool - i was trying to pass for hip or cool. it's the awkwardness that's nice.

The thing we need to work on as a country is our educational system. to me, that is something that our generation needs to be focused on. to make sure that for our next generation, every child - no matter what background, no matter what ethnicity, no matter whether they're whatever gender - that they are all educated to have real equal opportunity. that's number one for me. but i have no question that if it's not our generation that will make sure that that happens that it will be our children's generation.

My generation those who were students in the late 60s was always, in the words of the who, talking about our generation. that's what we thought of ourselves, as the most important thing since sliced bread. and the "we" that we meant was really the western europeans and american generation. and as i think back i suppose i have a sense of guilt on behalf of my generation, a sense that we were terribly provincial and didn't understand the really important stuff that was going on in eastern europe.

Every generation thinks things are happening that have never happened before. every generation of people thinks we're in the last days. every generation's filled with pessimists. but when you have the millennials generation, a majority of which have never had a job - you might even be able to put the period there: "have never had a job, period" - or never had a job in a healthy economy.

In general, i feel, or i have come to feel, that the richest writing comes not from the people who dedicate themselves to writing alone. i know this is contradicted again and again but i continue to feel it. they don't, of course, write as much, or as fast, but i think it is riper and more satisfying when it does come. one of the difficulties of writing or doing any kind of creative work in america seems to me to be that we put such stress on production and material results. we put a time pressure and a mass pressure on creative work which are meaningless and infantile in that field.
