With the communication internet, whole industries have been disrupted. you're in the publishing industry, you understand that. before, we had newspapers, magazines - now you're on the web. i'm in book publishing. i don't have to tell you what's happened to us. television has taken a hit. the music industry. but, thousands of new businesses have emerged on this new communication revolution platform. not just google, facebook, and twitter. there are thousands of operations. businesses that are doing the platforms, the apps. they're mining the big data. they're creating the connections.

The future of publishing lies with the small and medium-sized presses, because the big publishers in new york are all part of huge conglomerates.

In harlem, for instance, all of the stores are owned by white people, all of the buildings are owned by white people. the black people are just there - paying rent, buying the groceries; but they don't own the stores, clothing stores, food stores, any kind of stores; don't even own the homes that they live in. they are all owned by outsiders, and for these run-down apartment dwellings, the black man in harlem pays more money than the man down in the rich park avenue section.

I worked at a factory owned by germans, at coal pits owned by frenchmen, and at a chemical plant owned by belgians. there i discovered something about capitalists. they are all alike, whatever the nationality. all they wanted from me was the most work for the least money that kept me alive. so i became a communist.

There were no formerly heroic times, and there was no formerly pure generation. there is no one here but us chickens, and so it has always been.
