In the early 1970s, milton friedman argued that corporations should not be socially responsible because they had no mandate to be; they existed to make money, not to be charitable institutions. but in the economy of the 21st century, corporations cannot be socially responsible, if social responsibility is understood to mean sacrificing profits for the sake of some perceived social good. that's because competition has become so much more intense.

In short, my vision of a responsible free society is one in which we discourage evil, but do not prohibit it. we make our children and students aware of the consequences of drug abuse and other forms of irresponsible behavior. but after all our persuading, if they still want to use harmful drugs, that is their privilege. in a free society, individuals must have the right to do right or wrong, as long as they don't threaten or infringe upon the rights or property of others. they must also suffer the consequences of their actions, as it is from consequences that they learn to choose properly

We can ill afford to have activities conducted as "non-profit," that is, as activities that devour capital rather than form it, if they can be organized as activities that form capital, as activities that make a profit.

Any group or "collective," large or small, is only a number of individuals. a group can have no rights other than the rights of its individual members. in a free society, the "rights" of any group are derived from the rights of its members through their voluntary individual choice and contractual agreement, and are merely the application of these individual rights to a specific undertaking... a group, as such, has no rights.

See, i am the mayor of realville, and science is not up to a vote. it either is or isn't. whatever it is, it is or isn't, but it's not up to a vote. global warming doesn't exist because a "consequences of scientists" agree. manmade global warming either is happening or it isn't, but it isn't up to a vote. but it is being presented to you as a consequences of scientists. therefore, the science is not settled. besides that, we all know that it's a hoax now. it's just some people don't want to accept that, but it is.

Safety lies in catering to the in-group. we are not all brave. all i would ask of writers who find it hard to question the universal validity of their personal opinions and affiliations is that they consider this: every group we belong to - by gender, sex, race, religion, age - is an in-group, surrounded by an immense out-group, living next door and all over the world, who will be alive as far into the future as humanity has a future. that out-group is called other people. it is for them that we write.
