And what physicians say about disease is applicable here: that at the beginning a disease is easy to cure but difficult to diagnose; but as time passes, not having been recognized or treated at the outset, it becomes easy to diagnose but difficult to cure. the same thing occurs in affairs of state; for by recognizing from afar the diseases that are spreading in the state (which is a gift given only to the prudent ruler), they can be cured quickly; but when, not having been recognized, they are not recognized and are left to grow to the extent that everyone recognizes them, there is no longer any cure.

What is sin? it is the glory of god not honored. the holiness of god not reverenced. the greatness of god not admired. the power of god not praised. the truth of god not sought. the wisdom of god not esteemed. the beauty of god not treasured. the goodness of god not savored. the faithfulness of god not trusted. the commandments of god not obeyed. the justice of god not respected. the wrath of god not feared. the grace of god not cherished. the presence of god not prized. the person of god not loved. that is sin.

The collective unconscious appears to consist of mythological motifs or primordial images, for which reason the myths of all nations are its real exponents. in fact the whole of mythology could be taken as a sort of projection of the collective unconscious. we can see this most clearly if we look at the heavenly constellations, whose originally chaotic forms are organized through the projection of images. this explains the influence of the stars as asserted by astrologers. these influences are nothing but unconscious instrospective perceptions of the collective unconscious.

What is 'grace'? it is god's own life, shared by us. god's life is love. deus caritas est. by grace we are able to share in the infinitely selfless love of him who is such pure actuality that he needs nothing and therefore cannot conceivably exploit anything for selfish ends. indeed, outside of him there is nothing, and whatever exists exists by his free gift of its being, so that one of the notions that is absolutely contradictory to the perfection of god is selfishness.

Faith is a living, bold trust in god's grace, so certain of god's favour that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it. such confidence and knowledge of god's grace makes you happy, joyful and bold in your relationship to god and all creatures. the holy spirit makes this happen through faith. because of it, you freely, willingly and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise the god who has shown you such grace.
