That's what is so great about being able to record a 13-song album. you can do a very eclectic group of songs. you do have some almost pop songs in there, but you do have your traditional country, story songs. you have your ballads, your happy songs, your sad songs, your love songs, and your feisty songs.

Melodies can be good depending on the context. you can have a simple melody, and if the harmony behind it is interesting, it can make a very simple melody really different. you can also have a complex melody. the more complex it is, the harder it is to sing, and then sometimes it can sound contrived. you could write a melody that would be fine on a saxophone but if you give it to a singer, it can sound raunchy.

Early on, before rock 'n' roll, i listened to big band music - anything that came over the radio - and music played by bands in hotels that our parents could dance to. we had a big radio that looked like a jukebox, with a record player on the top. the radio/record player played 78rpm records. when we moved to that house, there was a record on there, with a red label. it was bill monroe, or maybe it was the stanley brothers. i'd never heard anything like that before. ever. and it moved me away from all the conventional music that i was hearing.

The melody seems to have gone to the country. the country music seems to still have melody and interesting lyrics. but pop music, you've got to really listen hard to somebody who's doing a good melody and a good lyric.
