There are a lot of good comics, no doubt, but as far as the quality of the comics goes, i think what you have is a bunch of situational comics - there are black comics that work only black crowds, gay comics that do only gay crowds, and southern comics that only work down south, and so on with asian, latino, indian, midgets, etc. the previous generation's comics were better because they had to make everybody laugh.

Saying 'i notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'hey, i notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of lindsay lohan. why is that?' in fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame. even 'lame' is kind of lame. saying 'you're lame' is like saying 'you walk with a limp.' yeah, whatever, so does 50 cent, and he's done all right for himself.

I have become a giant fan of the testing process, especially with a comedy. i mean, they tell you what's funny. it's almost tailor-made for people who shoot the way we shoot, trying a million different options and versions of things. because the audience doesn't laugh at a joke, we put in another joke. if they don't laugh at the next joke, we put in another joke. you just keep doing them and you can get the movie to the point where every joke is funny, if you have enough options in the can.

The lovely thing about writing comics for so many years is that comics is a medium that is mistaken for a genre. it's not that there are not genres within comics, but because comics tend to be regarded as a genre in itself, content becomes secondary; as long as i was doing a comic, people would pick it up.

I love paint. i like watercolours. i like acrylic paint... a little bit. i like house paint. i like oil-based paint, and i love oil paint. i love the smell of turpentine and i like that world of oil paint very, very, very much.

To women, drummers seem like these adorable, sexy neanderthals, but lead singers seem mysterious and dangerous. so while the lead singers all want to be david bowie, floating into parties and being the center of attention, it's the drummers who are in the corner doing keg stands and breaking tables. usually it's the drummers who get the fun-loving ladies and the singers who get the nutcases.
