It'd be negligent to say that i don't want to be at the top of the charts. of course i do, it's proof that your song is being heard. but i think it's more about the work for me and being proud of what i'm doing in music than what people think about my music. i want to like my music before you like it. i don't want to sell anything that i don't really like. i don't want to sell myself short just to get to the top of the charts. it doesn't feel that great. feeling proud of your work feels greater than being at the top of the charts.

Safety lies in catering to the in-group. we are not all brave. all i would ask of writers who find it hard to question the universal validity of their personal opinions and affiliations is that they consider this: every group we belong to - by gender, sex, race, religion, age - is an in-group, surrounded by an immense out-group, living next door and all over the world, who will be alive as far into the future as humanity has a future. that out-group is called other people. it is for them that we write.
Sex Lying Writing
From a writing standpoint, maybe television is a little more satisfying because it's not all hinging on one thing. you can experiment, week to week, and you can be a little narrower in your scope one week, and then be a little broader the next week. but with film, everything can look the way you want it to look. you can really sculpt the final product. so from a directorial standpoint, film is more satisfying. but, they're both forms of media that i'd like to keep involvement in.

The next time you have a choice between chasing the charts (whichever charts you keep track of) and doing the work your customers crave, do the work instead.
