It is almost impossible to overestimate the value of true humility and its power in the spiritual life. for the beginning of humility is the beginning of blessedness and the consummation of humility is the perfection of all joy. humility contains in itself the answer to all the great problems of the life of the soul. it is the only key to faith, with which the spiritual life begins: for faith and humility are inseparable. in perfect humility all selfishness disappears and your soul no longer lives for itself or in itself for god: and it is lost and submerged in him and transformed into him.

Christ be with me, christ within me, christ behind me, christ before me, christ beside me, christ to win me, christ to comfort me and restore me, christ beneath me, christ above me, christ in quiet, christ in danger, christ in hearts of all that love me, christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Christ is already in that place of peace, which is all in all. he is on the right hand of god. he is hidden in the brightness of the radiance which issues from the everlasting throne. he is in the very abyss of peace, where there is no voice of tumult or distress, but a deep stillness--stillness, that greatest and most awful of all goods which we can fancy; that most perfect of joys, the utter profound, ineffable tranquillity of the divine essence. he has entered into his rest. that is our home; here we are on a pilgrimage, and christ calls us to his many mansions which he has prepared.

The stillness in stillness is not the real stillness; only when there is stillness in movement does the universal rhythm manifest.

Humility is not cowardice. meekness is not weakness. humility and meekness are indeed spiritual powers.

I tensed, waiting for the fury - both his and mine - but it was only quiet and calm in the darkness of his room. i could almost taste the sweetness of reunion in the air, a separate fragrance from the perfume of his breath; the emptiness when we were apart left its own bitter aftertaste, something i didn't consciously notice until it was removed. there was no friction in the space between us. the stillness was peaceful - not like the calm before the tempest, but like a clear night untouched by even the dream of a storm.
