There is a power in the soul, quite separate from the intellect, which sweeps away or recognizes the marvelous, by which god is felt. faith stands serenely far above the reach of the atheism of science. it does not rest on the wonderful, but on the eternal wisdom and goodness of god. the revelation of the son was to proclaim a father, not a mystery. no science can sweep away the everlasting love which the heart feels, and which the intellect does not even pretend to judge or recognize.

It's as if scientists exert every effort of will they possess deliberately to find the least significant problems in the world and explain them. art matters. happiness matters. love matters. good matters. evil matters. slam the fridge door. they are the only things that matter and they are of course precisely the things that science goes out of its way to ignore.

We don't always possess faith in the sense of having a clear embodiment of something to hang on to. the relationship between the intellect and faith is a very curious one. sometimes the intellect can point us to faith, sometimes the intellect can stand in the way of faith. sometimes, as st john of the cross points out, we have to darken or blind the intellect in order to have faith.

Do you feel that you have lost your way in life? then god himself will show you your way. are you utterly helpless, worn out, body and soul? then god's eternal love is ready and willing to help you up, and revive you. are you wearied with doubts and terrors? then god's eternal light is ready to show you your way; god's eternal peace ready to give you peace. do you feel yourself full of sins and faults? then take heart; for god's unchangeable will is, to take away those sins, and purge you from those faults.

Darwin matters because evolution matters. evolution matters because science matters. science matters because it is the preeminent story of our age, an epic saga about who we are, where we came from and where we are going.
