I bet if you look at the average teenager and the average adult, the average teenager has read more books in the last year than the average adult. now of course the adult would be all like, 'i'm busy, i got a job, i got stuff to do.' whatever! read! i mean, you're watching csi: miami. why would you be watching csi: miami, when you could be reading csi: miami, the novelization?

They used to ask: "how will this decision that we make today affect our people in the future?" now we make decisions based on: "how does it affect me, now? how does it affect the next shareholders meeting, three months ahead? how does it affect my next political campaign?"

When you're a teenager, everything seems like the end of the world, and i don't think that's necessarily a silly thing. you're waking up and becoming aware that the world has problems and those problems affect you, whereas when you're young they don't seem to affect you that much even if you're aware of them. this dystopian trend picks up on that little part of your life where everything feels really extreme and it honors that part of your life and says, "yeah. it is the end of the world. look at it."

You don't fall in love because you fall in love; you fall in love because of the need, desperate, to fall in love. when you feel that need, you have to watch your step: like having drunk a philter, the kind that makes you fall in love with the first thing you meet. it could be a duck-billed platypus.

Romantic love is mental illness. but it's a pleasurable one. it's a drug. it distorts reality, and that's the point of it. it would be impossible to fall in love with someone that you really saw. the second you meet someone that you're going to fall in love with you deliberately become a moron. you do this in order to fall in love, because it would be impossible to fall in love with any human being if you actually saw them for what they are.
