I do really like doing animated movies. i like watching animated movies, and i always have. that's something i didn't let go of, from when i was a kid. it's always exciting for me to get to do that. animated movies are so rarely bad.

I try to write about real women, real people - in other words flawed characters. i find flawed characters much more interesting than perfect ones and enjoy the challenge of making readers root for them in spite of their unsympathetic path and destructive choices. life is about the gray areas. things are seldom black and white, even when we wish they were and think they should be, and i like exploring this nuanced terrain.

Goal setting is fine if you want to be the warrior archetype. these people are setting goals constantly and trying to get someplace else. they say, "if you don't know where you are going, then you won't know when you get there." when you get to a higher level of consciousness, though, when you get into a spiritual approach to life, you are not trying to get someplace else, because you never can get it done. you never are going to get there. instead, what you want to do is get to a place where you are at peace. you are connected to god.

What interests sam mendes are characters and relationships, and he was a genius at giving you the freedom to create the type of character you want, and also to explore and have fun with your fellow actors. for him, characters and relationships are really the heartbeat of the film, and then the action is the backdrop. by developing the characters, he makes you care that much more about the action and going on a journey with the characters.

I don't know if you've ever seen some of the sidney lumet movies, like dog day afternoon [1975] or network [1976]. they're real events that happen in real time, and there are all of these different characters experiencing the same thing in different parts of the movie ... i am so bad at explaining my films. but it's in the world of finance and the world of media, and how they connect. it was a big undertaking. a big, mainstream movie, which stars julia roberts and george clooney. but for me, it's really just a small story about character and people.

We always have the movies that are more toward real life, but they don't have that much drama or suspense, or we have the full of drama or suspense, but they're far away from real life. always when i was watching a film, films with good drama, i was thinking, "i wish they were more close to real life." but when i was watching real life films i was thinking, "well i wish it had more drama." i've tried, in the movies that i worked so far, to get these two things closer and closer to each other.
