We've now got a group of young people in this country who for all practical purposes are american. they grew up here. they've gone to school here. they don't know anything other than being american kids. but their parents may have brought them here without all the proper paperwork - might have brought them here when they were three, might have brought them here when they were five. and so, lo and behold, by the time they finish school, and they're ready to go to college, they find out they can't go to college and, in fact, their status as americans are threatened.

I really had a rough time in middle school. middle school to me was the way most people explain high school. then in high school i had a blast. i basically did everything that you would do in high school or in college, so it really wasn't a difficult thing to pull out.

I don't know if one's more typecasting than the other, or what i am more like. but i know that the high school i went to was a private school. it was prep school. it was a boarding school. so we didn't have a shop class. we didn't have saturday detention. we went to school on saturday. we did have sunday study, which you very rarely get, because then you have 13 straight days of school. who wants that?

But you know, where did the brontes go to college? where did george eliot go to college? where did thomas paine or thomas jefferson or george washington go? did george washington go to college? this idea which we now have that people ought to have these credentials is really ridiculous. where did homer go to college?

America has a terrible educational problem in the sense that we have too many youngsters not finishing school. a third of our kids don't finish high school, 50 percent of minorities don't finish high school.

Teenage girls, please don’t worry about being super popular in high school, or being the best actress in high school, or the best athlete. not only do people not care about any of that the second you graduate, but when you get older, if you reference your successes in high school too much, it actually makes you look kind of pitiful, like some babbling old tennessee williams character with nothing else going on in her current life. what i’ve noticed is that almost no one who was a big star in high school is also big star later in life. for us overlooked kids, it’s so wonderfully fair.
