I have spent much time in the study of the abstract sciences; but the paucity of persons with whom you can communicate on such subjects disgusted me with them. when i began to study man, i saw that these abstract sciences are not suited to him, and that in diving into them, i wandered farther from my real object than those who knew them not, and i forgave them for not having attended to these things. i expected then, however, that i should find some companions in the study of man, since it was so specifically a duty. i was in error. there are fewer students of man than of geometry.

The signs that presage growth, so similar, it seems to me, to those in early adolescence: discontent, restlessness, doubt, despair, longing, are interpreted falsely as signs of decay. in youth one does not as often misinterpret the signs; one accepts them, quite rightly, as growing pains. one takes them seriously, listens to them, follows where they lead. ... but in the middle age, because of the false assumption that it is a period of decline, one interprets these life-signs, paradoxically, as signs of approaching death.

There is nothing to be known about anything except an initially large, and forever expandable, web of relations to other things. everything that can serve as a term of relation can be dissolved into another set of relations, and so on for ever. there are, so to speak, relations all the way down, all the way up, and all the way out in every direction: you never reach something which is not just one more nexus of relations.

Education as the practice of freedom--as opposed to education as the practice of domination--denies that man is abstract, isolated, independent and unattached to the world; it also denies that the world exists as reality apart from people. authentic reflection considers neither abstract man nor the world without people, but people in their relations with the world. in these relations consciousness and world are simultaneous: consciousness neither precedes the world nor follows it.

Almost everyone... seems to be quite sure that the differences between the methodologies of history and of the natural sciences are vast. for, we are assured, it is well known that in the natural sciences we start from observation and proceed by induction to theory. and is it not obvious that in history we proceed very differently? yes, i agree that we proceed very differently. but we do so in the natural sciences as well.

If the resources of different nations are treated as exclusive properties of these nations as wholes, if international economic relations, instead of being relations between individuals, become increasingly relations between whole nations organized as trading bodies, they inevitably become the source of friction and envy between whole nations.
