A man who lies to himself, and believes his own lies becomes unable to recognize truth, either in himself or in anyone else, and he ends up losing respect for himself and for others. when he has no respect for anyone, he can no longer love, and, in order to divert himself, having no love in him, he yields to his impulses, indulges in the lowest forms of pleasure, and behaves in the end like an animal. and it all comes from lying - lying to others and to yourself.

Above all, avoid lies, all lies, especially the lie to yourself. keep watch on your own lie and examine it every hour, every minute. and avoid contempt, both of others and of yourself: what seems bad to you in yourself is purified by the very fact that you have noticed it in yourself. and avoid fear, though fear is simply the consequence of every lie. never be frightened at your own faintheartedness in attaining love, and meanwhile do not even be very frightened by your own bad acts.

If a person is cold and rigid, he feels within himself as if he were in a grave. he is not living, he cannot enjoy this life for he cannot express himself and he cannot see the light and life outside. what keeps man from developing the heart quality? his exacting attitude. he wants to make a business of love. he says, 'if you will love me, i will love you.' as soon as a man measures and weighs his favors and his services and all that he does for one whom he loves, he ceases to know what love is. love sees the beloved and nothing else.

It is not given to man to know the whole truth. his duty lies in living up to the truth as he sees it, and in doing so, to resort to the purest means, i.e., to non-violence. god alone knows absolute truth. therefore, i have often said, truth is god. it follows that man, a finite being, cannot know absolute truth. nobody in this world possesses absolute truth. this is god's attribute alone. relative truth is all we know. therefore, we can only follow the truth as we see it. such pursuit of truth cannot lead anyone astray.
