A zebra died after a rhino unintentionally punctured its abdomen, Colchester Zoo mentioned.
Extra particulars have been launched by the zoo about the incident on Friday, which occurred in its blended species African habitat.
Two rhinos – Astrid and her son Tayo – have been sparring with each other, described by the zoo as “common and pure behaviour” for the species.
Astrid tried to maneuver Ziggy the zebra out of the way in which, however in doing so Ziggy was injured and died a couple of minutes later.
In a statement on its website, Colchester Zoo mentioned Ziggy had lived fortunately with different species – together with the rhino – within the Kingdom of the Wild habitat since 2017.
He was described by the zoo as “a a lot liked animal who shall be dearly missed”.
Astrid – a southern white rhino – has given delivery to 2 calves at Colchester Zoo, including one in January 2023.
The zoo mentioned the types of incidents that occurred on Friday have been “extraordinarily uncommon” and its Animal Care Workforce would “proceed to carefully monitor the animals’ behaviour within the coming weeks”.
In its assertion, the zoo thanked supporters for his or her well-wishes, and mentioned its crew had handled “this very tough scenario extraordinarily professionally”.
The African habitat – which was in-built 2001 – is dwelling to reticulated giraffes, maneless zebras, white rhinos, ostriches, topped cranes and a larger kudu – a kind of antelope.
