In school, the year was the marker. fifth grade. senior year of high school. sophomore year of college. then after, the jobs were the marker. that office. this desk. but now that school is over and i've been working at the same place in the same office at the same desk for longer than i can truly believe, i realize: you have become the marker. this is your era. and it's only if it goes on and on that will have to look for other ways to identify the time.

On the political front, of course it's a zero-sum game. if it's all white males holding positions, you bring 10 women in, then it's, 'women are coming!' get 10 blacks and it's, 'blacks are coming!' 'hispanics are coming!' zero-sum game. the seatmates might change but the chairs don't move. in the economy, the number of chairs can actually increase.

Not only do i disbelieve in the need for compensation, but i believe that the seeking for rewards and punishments out of this lifeleads men to a ruinous ignorance of the fact that their inevitable rewards and punishments are here.

One problem with politics is that it is a zero sum game, i.e. politicians argue how to cut the pie smaller and smaller, by reshuffling pieces of the pie. i think this is destructive. instead, we should be creating a bigger pie, i.e. funding the science that is the source of all our prosperity. science is not a zero sum game.

Economists and workplace consultants regard it as almost unquestioned dogma that people are motivated by rewards, so they don't feel the need to test this. it has the status more of religious truth than scientific hypothesis. the facts are absolutely clear. there is no question that in virtually all circumstances in which people are doing things in order to get rewards, extrinsic tangible rewards undermine intrinsic motivation.the bonus myth: how paying for results can backfire the world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.
