Questions are not happenstance thoughts nor are questions common problems of today which one picks up from hearsay and booklearning and decks out with a gesture of profundity questions grow out of confrontation with the subject matter and the subject matter is there only where eyes are, it is in this manner that questions will be posed and all the more considering that questions that have today fallen out of fashion in the great industry of problems. one stands up for nothing more than the normal running of the industry. philosophy interprets its corruption as the resurrection of metaphysics.

One might think this means that imaginary numbers are just a mathematical game having nothing to do with the real world. from the viewpoint of positivist philosophy, however, one cannot determine what is real. all one can do is find which mathematical models describe the universe we live in. it turns out that a mathematical model involving imaginary time predicts not only effects we have already observed but also effects we have not been able to measure yet nevertheless believe in for other reasons. so what is real and what is imaginary? is the distinction just in our minds?

As human beings, don't we need questions without answers as well as questions with answers, questions that we might someday answer and questions that we can never answer?

All along — not only since she left, but for a decade before — i had been imagining her without listening, without knowing that she made as a poor a window as i did. and so i could not imagine her as a person who could feel fear, who could feel isolated in a roomful of people, who could be shy about her record collection because it was too personal to share. someone who might have read travel books to escape having to live in the town that so many people escape to. someone who — because no one thought she was a person — had no one to really talk to.

It might be crazy to expect a high government official to speak the truth. it might be crazy to believe that government policy will be something more than the handmaiden of the most powerful interests. it might be crazy to argue that we should preserve a tradition that has been part of our tradition for most of our history -- free culture. if this is crazy, then let there be more crazies. soon.

While we're over here blocked up in our departments and locked up in our own judgments and dealing with our own crazy problems, they're over there dealing with equivalent problems. one of the things that i am so frightened by lately is that men are having just as difficult a time striking a balance as we are.
