Unfortunately, the united states and a few other governments have used the war on terrorism as a way of violating human rights. i am referring to the case of the guantánamo bay prisoners. this violation of the rights of prisoners has been so unbelievable that the united nations has reminded the united states repeatedly that the treatment of prisoners should take place according to the preestablished conventions of the united nations.

I have always felt comedy and tragedy are roommates. if you look up comedy and tragedy, you will find a very old picture of two masks. one mask is tragedy. it looks like its crying. the other mask is comedy. it looks like its laughing. nowadays, we would say, how tasteless and insensitive. a comedy mask is laughing at a tragedy mask.

What is true, and i think that we can't deny it, is that some of the same concerns about globalization, about technology, rapid social change that were reflected in brexit, that's been reflected in some of the debates in germany and france and other places, that those exist in the united states as well. my view is that over the long term, over the next 10, 15, 20 years, if we are able to address the legitimate economic concerns of those who feel left behind by globalization, then many of these tensions will be reduced. and we will see a world that is less divided.

So there’s a kind of resurgence of the sense of freedom and spontaneity in nature. from nature being bound into a rigid, deterministic model, freedom, spontaneity and openness are emerging once again. it’s now recognized the future is open, not determined by the past. and this is true in many realms, the astronomical realm, the human realm, the meteorological realm in many ways.

Human society is the embodiment of changeless laws which the whimsicalities and circumstances of men and women involve and overwrap. the realm of literature is the realm of these accidental manners and humours--a spacious realm; and the true literary artist concerns himself mainly with them.
