This is a devastating problem, is, the longer our children are in school, the worse they do. year after year after year, our children in america are falling further behind. our 3- and 4-year-olds enter kindergarten ok, and they fall further and further behind. each year, children in other countries are learning more than children in this country. and so the gap between american student performance in singapore and finland and south korea and canada and these other countries, the gap widens year after year after year.

Then they grow away from the earth then they grow away from the sun then they grow away from the plants and the animals. they see no life. when they look they see only objects. the world is a dead thing for them the trees and the rivers are not alive. the mountains and stones are not alive. the deer and bear are objects. they see no life. they fear. they fear the world. they destroy what they fear. they fear themselves.

And there's a wonderful parable in the new testament: the sower scatters seeds. some seeds fall in the pathway and get stamped on, and they don't grow. some fall on the rocks, and they don't grow. but some seeds fall on fallow ground, and they grow and multiply a thousandfold. who knows where some good little thing that you've done may bring results years later that you never dreamed of?
