All i really know in nonfiction is that when i come home, i've got all these notes and i'm trying to figure out what actually happened to me. i usually kind of know what happened, but as you work through the notes, you find that certain scenes write well and some don't even though they should. those make a constellation of meaning that weirdly ends up telling you what you just went through. it's a slightly different process, but still there's mystery because when you're bearing down on the scenes, sometimes you find out they mean something different than what you thought.

I'm trying to find these rare moments where you feel completely illuminated. facts never illuminate you. the phone directory of manhattan doesn't illuminate you, although it has factually correct entries, millions of them. but these rare moments of illumination that you find when you read a great poem, you instantly know. you instantly feel this spark of illumination. you are almost stepping outside of yourself and you see something sublime.

I'm still in the middle of the transition. i'm still in man-boy mode. and that won't go away for a while. but it's a fun time to be in, because it's very rare that people get to work through this time. it's rare to see a john cusack in say anything. it's rare that you'd find an actor right in the cusp of the child-to adult transition, just got through puberty, just getting into a different way of life. there's few movies like that, and few roles like that, so it's going to be tough to pick and choose. i guess the goal is good people, work with good people.
