The way i see it, the difference between farmers and suburbanites is the difference in the way we feel about dirt. to them, the earth is something to be respected and preserved, but dirt gets no respect. a farmer likes dirt. suburbanites like to get rid of it. dirt is the working layer of earth, and dealing with dirt is as much a part of farm life as dealing with manure. neither is user-friendly but both are necessary.

If we can abstract pathogenicity and hygiene from our notion of dirt, we are left with the old definition of dirt as matter out of place. this is a very suggestive approach. it implies two conditions: a set of ordered relations and a contrevention of that order. dirt then, is never a unique, isolated event. where there is dirt there is a system. dirt is the by-product of a systematic ordering and classification of matter, in so far as ordering involves rejecting inappropriate elements.

My advice is you've got to make sure you wear the clothes and not [let] the clothes wear you. it's quite simple in a way. don't wear something you totally feel uncomfortable with, but take some chances. play around a bit. i felt very uncomfortable in suits when i was younger, so what i just started doing was wearing suits when i was going to dinner. i used to overdress a little bit so i got used to wearing suits. now wearing a suit is like wearing a track suit for me. so it's all good.

Most eyes have more than one color, but usually they're related. blue eyes may have two shades of blue, or blue and gray, or blue and green, or even a fleck or two of brown. most people don't notice that. when i first went to get my state id card, the form asked for eye color. i tried to write in all the colors in my own eyes, but the space wasnt big enough. they told me to put 'brown'. i put 'brown', but that is not the only color in my eyes. it is just the color that people see because they do not really look atr other people's eyes.
