There are only patterns, patterns on top of patterns, patterns that affect other patterns. patterns hidden by patterns. patterns within patterns. if you watch close, history does nothing but repeat itself. what we call chaos is just patterns we haven't recognized. what we call random is just patterns we can't decipher. what we can't understand we call nonsense. what we can't read we call gibberish. there is no free will. there are no variables.

There are only patterns. patterns on top of patterns, patterns that affect other patterns, patterns hidden by patterns, patterns within patterns.

Mental patterns do not originate out of inorganic nature. they originate out of society, which originates out of inorganic nature. and, as anthropologists know so well, what a mind thinks is as dominated by biological patterns as social patterns are dominated by biological patterns and as biological patterns are dominated by inorganic patterns. there is no direct scientific connection between mind and matter. as the atomic scientist, niels bohr, said, "we are suspended in language." our intellectual description of nature is always culturally derived.

We walked on the beach, fed blue corn ships to the seagulls, and munched on blue jelly beans, blue saltwater taffy and all the other free samples my mom brought home from work. i guess i should explain the blue food. see, gabe had once told my mom there was no such thing. they had this fight, which seemed like a really small thing at the time. but ever since, my mom went out of her way to eat blue. she baked blue birthday cakes. she mixed blueberry smoothies. she bought blue-corn tortilla chips and brought home blue candy from the shop.

Pictures are the idea in visual or pictorial form; and the idea has to be legible, both in the individual picture and in the collective context - which presupposes, of course, that words are used to convey information about the idea and the context. however, none of this means that pictures function as illustrations of an idea: ultimately, they are the idea. nor is the verbal formulation of the idea a translation of the visual: it simply bears a certain resemblance to the meaning of the idea. it is an interpretation, literally a reflection.

Many flagship state universities have wonderful digital libraries that are accessed by people around the world. in future, if not current, budget crises, trustees, board members, and administrators may wonder why these state institutions - with an articulated primary clientele of students, faculty, and staff members and a secondary clientele of all citizens of the state - should be spending resources on a digital library that is used by many people beyond the primary and secondary service populations.
