Writing fiction is not a profession that leaves one well-disposed toward reading fiction. one starts out loving books and stories, and then one becomes jaded and increasingly hard to please. i read less and less fiction these days, finding the buzz and the joy i used to get from fiction in ever stranger works of non-fiction, or poetry.

It had also been my belief since i started writing fiction that science fiction is never really about the future. when science fiction is old, you can only read it as being pretty much about the moment in which it was written. but it seemed to me that the toolkit that science fiction had given me when i started working had become the toolkit of a kind of literary naturalism that could be applied to an inherently incredible present.

I regard sex as the central problem of life. and now that the problem of religion has practically been settled, and that the problem of labor has at least been placed on a practical foundation, the question of sex—with the racial questions that rest on it—stands before the coming generations as the chief problem for solution. sex lies at the root of life, and we can never learn to reverence life until we know how to understand sex.

Each pursues his private interest and only his private interest; and thereby serves the private interests of all, the general interest, without willing it or knowing it. the real point is not that each individual's pursuit of his private interest promotes the totality of private interests, the general interest. one could just as well deduce from this abstract phrase that each individual reciprocally blocks the assertion of the others' interests, so that, instead of a general affirmation, this war of all against all produces a general negation.

When it does get below freezing and there is - it's cold enough for ice to form, then that changes the whole landscape, and it makes the landscape a different landscape to the one that i worked with previously. and i want to understand that. but the big tension of the ice works is that they're often made when it's cold enough to freeze one piece of ice to another.
