My personal attitude toward atheists is the same attitude that i have toward christians, and would be governed by a very orthodox text: "by their fruits shall ye know them." i wouldn't judge a man by the presuppositions of his life, but only by the fruits of his life. and the fruits - the relevant fruits - are, i'd say, a sense of charity, a sense of proportion, a sense of justice. and whether the man is an atheist or a christian, i would judge him by his fruits, and i have therefore many agnostic friends.

Inside every one of us is a garden, and every practitioner has to go back to their garden and take care of it. maybe in the past, you left in untended for a long time. you should know exactly what is going on in your own garden, and try to put everything in order. restore the beauty; restore the harmony in your garden. if it is well tended, many people will enjoy your garden.

So often, we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down in here. i'm not happy. i don't know what's wrong. if i just had another job, i could be happy. if i just get married, i would be happy. well if i just wasn't married, i would be happy. well, if i just had some kids, i'll be happy. i'll be happy when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. if i had a bigger house, i would be happy. well, i got a big house. now if i just had a maid to clean, i'd be happy. well, now if i just had a maid i could get along with better, i'd be happy.

I wouldn't judge a man by the presuppositions of his life, but only by the fruits of his life. and the fruits - the relevant fruits - are, i'd say, a sense of charity, a sense of proportion, a sense of justice.

Once in those very early days my brother brought into the nursery the lid of a biscuit tin which he had covered with moss and garnished with twigs and flowers so as to make it a toy garden or a toy forest. that was the first beauty i ever knew. what the real garden had failed to do, the toy garden did. it made me aware of nature-not, indeed, as a storehouse of forms and colors but as something cool, dewy, fresh, exuberant....as long as i live my imagination of paradise will retain something of my brother's toy garden.
