An armed republic submits less easily to the rule of one of its citizens than a republic armed by foreign forces. rome and sparta were for many centuries well armed and free. the swiss are well armed and enjoy great freedom. among other evils caused by being disarmed, it renders you contemptible. it is not reasonable to suppose that one who is armed will obey willingly one who is unarmed; or that any unarmed man will remain safe among armed servants.

I would say except when i have been attacked the black community has seldom seen fit to even mention the gay aspect. and since when i have been attacked i have usually been defended by the black community, i would say that the black newspapers have played it very straight. if i was attacked they simply published that i was attacked, if i was defended they simply said i had been defended. but i don't think they have taken any effort at maligning me or maligning gays or making any effort to give to people anything that wasn't news.

It just was a gradual development over the years. i mean last year was 'all you need is love.' this year, it's 'all you need is love and peace, baby.' give peace a chance, and remember love. the only hope for us is peace. violence begets violence. you can have peace as soon as you like if we all pull together. you're all geniuses, and you're all beautiful. you don't need anyone to tell you who you are. you are what you are. get out there and get peace, think peace, and live peace and breathe peace, and you'll get it as soon as you like.

We can work on inner peace and world peace at the same time. on one hand, people have found inner peace by losing themselves in a cause larger than themselves, like the cause of world peace, because finding inner peace means coming from the self-centered life into the life centered in the good of the whole. on the other hand, one of the ways of working for world peace is to work for more inner peace, because world peace will never be stable until enough of us find inner peace to stabilize it.

I think it's very pretty. can it be pretty if no one thinks it's pretty? i think it's pretty. if you're the only one? that's pretty pretty. and what about the boys? don't you want them to think you're pretty? i wouldn't want a boy to think i was pretty unless he was the kind of boy who thought i was pretty.
