I love movies; i grew up loving movies. i've always loved movies. i never thought about making movies until i took art classes and then i started studying different artists. as you study paintings, you see light and shadow, of course - rembrandt, eugène delacroix. you start to understand the relationship between people and art, and images. for me, between movies that i watched and art, it was like, i'd love to make moving art. moving pictures.

You've probably heard about the theory of steam-engine time - that even after the steam engine had been invented, it had to wait until people were ready to make use of it. the same thing happens in literary circles. the truth is, i'm not terribly interested in victorian times; i'm interested in victorian writers. i'm interested in most eras of history, but not the victorian era especially. i was interested in the john franklin expedition. i was interested in these last five weird years of dickens' life. and i just have to take the age that comes with all that when i write about it.

With a movie you're creating from the beginning this particular work, let's not call it work of art, because very few movies are works of art, let's just call them bits of popular culture, whatever they are, sometimes very rarely by accident a movie becomes a work of art.
