Oh god, are there so many of them in our land! students who can’t be happy until they’ve graduated, servicemen who can’t be happy until they are discharged, single folks who can’t be happy until they’ve found a mate, workers who can’t be happy until they’ve retired, adolescents who aren’t happy until they’re grown, ill people who aren’t happy until they’re well, failures who aren’t happy until they succeed, restless who can’t wait until they get out of town, and in most cases, vice versa, people waiting, waiting for the world to begin.

So often, we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down in here. i'm not happy. i don't know what's wrong. if i just had another job, i could be happy. if i just get married, i would be happy. well if i just wasn't married, i would be happy. well, if i just had some kids, i'll be happy. i'll be happy when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. if i had a bigger house, i would be happy. well, i got a big house. now if i just had a maid to clean, i'd be happy. well, now if i just had a maid i could get along with better, i'd be happy.

And yet i am happy. yes, happy. i swear. i swear that i am happy...what does it matter that i am a bit cheap, a bit foul, and that no one appreciates all the remarkable things about me-my fantasy, my erudition, my literary gift...i am happy that i can gaze at myself, for any man is absorbing-yes, really absorbing! ... i am happy-yes, happy!

Success for me is to feel happy - 80 percent of the time. that's been my goal in life. i think that comes from my father. he's a very optimistic, happy person. i'm not quite sure if i'll ever feel this, but i want to know how to be happy. i'm happy when i'm at work. i'm happy when i'm with my family or my dog. but there's always that feeling of, i'm not satisfied. i have that thing in my stomach where i just need to keep striving for things. in my mind, i want the fairy tale.

You can't make flivers without steel - and you can't make tragedies without social instability. the world's stable now. people are happy; they get what they want, and they never want what they can't get. they're well off; they're safe; they're never ill; they're not afraid of death; they're blissfully ignorant of passion and old age; they're plagued with no mothers or fathers; they've got no wives, or children, or lovers to feel strongly about; they're so conditioned that they pratically can't help behaving as they ought to behave.

The cord-cutting generation hates cable tv 'cause they think they're corporations and they rip people off and they make you buy a bunch of channels you never watch in order to get the channels that you do watch. they've always said, "we want to be a la cart. we want to be able to cord-cut. we want to be able to watch what we want." so it's now evolving where if they only want to watch hbo they can but they have to pay for it. if they only want to watch cinemax, they can, but have to pay for it.
