I do believe i begin to grasp the nature of miracles! for would it be a miracle, if there was any reason for it? miracles have nothing to do with reason. miracles contradict reason, they strike clean across mere human deserts, and deliver and save where they will. if they made sense, they would not be miracles.

You've probably heard about the theory of steam-engine time - that even after the steam engine had been invented, it had to wait until people were ready to make use of it. the same thing happens in literary circles. the truth is, i'm not terribly interested in victorian times; i'm interested in victorian writers. i'm interested in most eras of history, but not the victorian era especially. i was interested in the john franklin expedition. i was interested in these last five weird years of dickens' life. and i just have to take the age that comes with all that when i write about it.

I take pens and i write on the inside of my arm. when i'm with people and somebody says a really fascinating anecdote, or fact, or phrase, i'll write it on the inside of my arm. at the end of the day, i'll take the very best things that are on my arm and i'll copy them into a notebook that i always carry and only when the weather is absolutely terrible will i really key the very best of that notebook into the computer. at that point, it's all sort of censored twice - only the best things go from the arm to the book and only the best things go from the book to the computer.

I think that's one of the major overriding issues of the day, to deal with frivolous lawsuits. i think it creates a tremendous burden on our economy, a tremendous burden on health care, it creates all of this medicine, which is good medicine. it would be one of the most important things we could do. it, also would help the economy. a tremendous amount of money is taken out of our economy and a tremendous that is created by these frivolous lawsuits.
