A general flat minimum-wage law for all industry is permissible, but i do not think that it is a particularly wise method of achieving the end. i know much better methods of providing a minimum for everybody. but once you turn from laying down a general minimum for all industry to decreeing particular and different minimum for different industries, then, of course, you make the price mechanism inoperative, because it is no longer the price mechanism which will guide people between industries and trades.

Most of the nations that have serious gardening cultures have, or had, empires. you can't have this luxury of pleasure without somebody paying for it. this is nice to know. it's nice to know that when you sit down to enjoy a plate of strawberries, somebody got paid very little so that you could have your strawberries. it doesn't mean the strawberries will taste different, but it's nice to enjoy things less than we do. we enjoy things far too much, and it leads to incredible pain and suffering.

Certainly there are things worth believing. i believe in the brotherhood of man and the uniqueness of the individual. but if you ask me to prove what i believe, i can't. you know them to be true but you could spend a whole lifetime without being able to prove them. the mind can proceed only so far upon what it knows and can prove. there comes a point where the mind takes a leap—call it intuition or what you will—and comes out upon a higher plane of knowledge, but can never prove how it got there. all great discoveries have involved such a leap.

I would say realistically, and i don't want any headlines, but i would say realistically that next year would be the last year.

Is success just about winning? acclaim? trophies? wealth? our personal happiness or satisfaction? i have been blessed to experience some of these over the years, and i can answer without batting an eye: no. accomplishments, applause, awards and fortune are rewards that often come as the result of hard work and a determined spirit, but there is something bigger. something better. something that will outlast the winningest season, the plushest corner office, the heftiest bonus and the loudest cheers. that something can only be found when we look beyond the final score.
