But what i would like to say is that the spiritual life is a life in which you gradually learn to listen to a voice that says something else, that says, "you are the beloved and on you my favour rests."... i want you to hear that voice. it is not a very loud voice because it is an intimate voice. it comes from a very deep place. it is soft and gentle. i want you to gradually hear that voice. we both have to hear that voice and to claim for ourselves that that voice speaks the truth, our truth. it tells us who we are.

I think in general, people look at all olympic athletes, look at all superstar athletes, and they say, "okay, this guy doesn't have any insecurities." they're almost like these icons who - i don't know how to say it, but like they can't make mistakes. but the reality is, and i'll tell you this firsthand, a lot of great athletes have a lot of insecurities, and they have a really hard time dealing with a lot of so-called losing or however you want to classify it.

There are no words and there is no singing, but the music has a voice. it is an old voice and a deep voice, like the stump of a sweet cigar or a shoe with a hole. it is a voice that has lived and lives, with sorrow and shame, ecstasy and bliss, joy and pain, redemption and damnation. it is a voice with love and without love. i like the voice, and though i can't talk to it, i like the way it talks to me. it says it is all the same, young man. take it and let it be.

I decided that i want to live the rest of my life happy with what i'm doing. so when i play tennis again, i have to play it for the right reason. i don't want to play to get my no. 1 ranking back. i don't want to play for the attention, or to earn more. i don't even want to play because the world wants to see me do it, even though it's nice to know that the world is interested. i only want to play because i love the game, which is the reason i began to play at age seven in the first place.

The book works better if i know everything i can about the ending. not just what happens, but how it happens and what the language is; not just the last sentence, but enough of the sentences surrounding that last sentence to know what the tone of voice is. i imagined it as something almost musical. then you are writing toward something; you know the sound of your voice at the end of the story. that's how you want to sound in those final sentences: the degree that it is uplifting or not, the degree that it is melancholic or not.

Switch to piano! no. really, if you like an instrument that sings, play the saxophone. at its best it's like the human voice. of course, it would be best if you could actually sing with your own voice. the saxophone is an imperfect instrument, especially the tenor and soprano, as far as intonation goes. therefore, the challenge is to sing on an imperfect instrument or 'voice' that is outside of your body. i love that challenge and have for over forty-five years. as far as playing jazz, no other art form, other than conversation, can give the satisfaction of spontaneous interaction.
