If you spend your own money on yourself, you care how much you spend and how well you spend it. if you spend your own money on someone else, you care how much you spend, but you don't care how well it is spent. if you spend someone else's money on yourself, you don't care how much you spend, but you do care how well it is spent. and finally, if you spend someone else's money on someone else, you don't care how much you spend, and you don't care how well it is spent. that is government.

When you live in a poor neighborhood, you are living in an area where you have poor schools. when you have poor schools, you have poor teachers. when you have poor teachers, you get a poor education. when you get a poor education, you can only work in a poor-paying job. and that poor-paying job enables you to live again in a poor neighborhood. so, it's a very vicious cycle.

We proclaim human intelligence to be morally valuable per se because we are human. if we were birds, we would proclaim the ability to fly as morally valuable per se. if we were fish, we would proclaim the ability to live underwater as morally valuable per se. but apart from our obviously self-interested proclamations, there is nothing morally valuable per se about human intelligence.

Confidence is not lodged in people's brains, it comes from the support system that surrounds them. let's not confuse confidence overall with just self-confidence. self-confidence is only one part of confidence. people also need confidence in others - their colleagues and leaders - that they can count on them to do the right thing and not to let them down.

What is sin? it is the glory of god not honored. the holiness of god not reverenced. the greatness of god not admired. the power of god not praised. the truth of god not sought. the wisdom of god not esteemed. the beauty of god not treasured. the goodness of god not savored. the faithfulness of god not trusted. the commandments of god not obeyed. the justice of god not respected. the wrath of god not feared. the grace of god not cherished. the presence of god not prized. the person of god not loved. that is sin.

Faith is a living, bold trust in god's grace, so certain of god's favour that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it. such confidence and knowledge of god's grace makes you happy, joyful and bold in your relationship to god and all creatures. the holy spirit makes this happen through faith. because of it, you freely, willingly and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love and praise the god who has shown you such grace.
