We must realize that violence is not confined to physical violence. fear is violence, caste discrimination is violence, exploitation of others, however subtle, is violence, segregation is violence, thinking ill of others and condemning others are violence. in order to reduce individual acts of physical violence, we must work to eliminate violence at all levels, mental, verbal, personal, and social, including violence to animals, plants, and all other forms of life.

So often, we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down in here. i'm not happy. i don't know what's wrong. if i just had another job, i could be happy. if i just get married, i would be happy. well if i just wasn't married, i would be happy. well, if i just had some kids, i'll be happy. i'll be happy when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. if i had a bigger house, i would be happy. well, i got a big house. now if i just had a maid to clean, i'd be happy. well, now if i just had a maid i could get along with better, i'd be happy.

So she had to satisfy herself with the idea of love - loving the loving of things whose existence she didn't care at all about. love itself became the object of her love. she loved herself in love, she loved loving love, as love loves loving, and was able, in that way, to reconcile herself with a world that fell so short of what she would have hoped for. it was not the world that was the great and saving lie, but her willingness to make it beautiful and fair, to live a once-removed life, in a world once-removed from the one in which everyone else seemed to exist.

Relationship is action, is it not? action has meaning only in relationship; without understanding relationship, action on any level will only breed conflict. the understanding of relationship is infinitely more important than the search for any plan of action. the ideology, the pattern for action, prevents action. action based on ideology hinders the understanding of relationship between man and man.

I must remind you that starving a child is violence. suppressing a culture is violence. neglecting school children is violence. punishing a mother and her family is violence. discrimination against a working man is violence. ghetto housing is violence. ignoring medical need is violence. contempt for poverty is violence.

Transcending gives a human being a chance to think before acting. and experiencing this beautiful treasury within gets rid of torment and replaces it with happiness, inner peace, creativity intelligence, love, energy. this fuels a real good life and fuels an appreciation for all human beings. it's so powerful and it's a blessing for humanity.
