My real purpose in telling middle-school students stories was to practice telling stories. and i practiced on the greatest model of storytelling we've got, which is "the iliad" and "the odyssey." i told those stories many, many times. and the way i would justify it to the head teacher if he came in or to any parents who complained was, look, i'm telling these great stories because they're part of our cultural heritage. i did believe that.

I have always felt a little bit uncomfortable with question [why i'm write these stories]. it's not a question that you would ask a guy that writes detective stories or the guy that writes mystery stories, or westerns, or whatever. but it is asked of the writer of horror stories because it seems that there is something nasty about our love for horror stories, or boogies, ghosts and goblins, demons and devils.

Nothing can be left until the last minute, so that everyone knows exactly where they are. everyone is comfortable and everyone feels safe because we want people to be able to keep coming into this show and taking those risks. there are a lot of risks in this show, not just nudity, but emotional risks. we want the best actors to feel comfortable about coming in and exploring this subject matter with us.

While it may be theoretically possible to demonstrate the risks inherent in any treaty... the far greater risk to our security are the risks of unrestricted testing, the risks of a nuclear arms race, the risks of new nuclear powers.

I could play a cop, i could play a crook, i could play a lawyer, i could play a dentist, i could play an art critic-i could play the guy next door. i am the guy next door. i could play catholic, jewish, protestant. as a matter of fact, when i did the odd couple, i would do it a different way each night. on monday i'd be jewish, tuesday italian, wednesday irish-german-and i would mix them up. i did that to amuse myself, and it always worked.

There's a social and human necessity for some kind of continuity, but it's not axiomatic and not something you're born into; it's something you have to work at. and one of the ways to work at it - perhaps the best - is storytelling: telling stories about yourself to others, telling stories about yourself to yourself, telling stories about others to others.
