Every once and a while somebody writes a script, but even regardless of what age you are, most of the actors would all agree that it's all based upon material and the material has got to spark with you. it may be great material but you think it's great material for somebody else. or it's great material and i'm perfect for it. so, you just have to make that judgment and if you feel in the mood to do it.

I never felt like a happy-go-lucky ingenue to begin with. and parts are written better when you're older. when you're young, you're written to be an ingenue, and you're written to be a quality. you're actually not written to be a person, you're written for your youth to inspire someone else, usually a man. so i find it just much more liberating.

That's just like america. it's made up of lots of different people. we're all different colors, different ages, we do different jobs -- but it takes all of us black people, white people, brown people, men and women, young and old, working in the factories, working in the fields, working in offices, working in stores -- it takes a lot of different kinds of people to get the job done for america.

The desire for story is very, very deep in human beings. we are the only creature in the world that does this; we are the only creature that tells stories, and sometimes those are true stories and sometimes those are made up stories. then there are the larger stories, the grand narratives that we live in, which are things like nation and family and clan and so on. those stories are considered to be treated reverentially. they need to be part of the way in which we conduct the discourse of our lives and to prevent people from doing something very damaging to human nature.

Yes, we could talk to you for days on end about all the bad first dates. those are stories. funny stories. awkward stories. stories we love to share, because by sharing them, we get something out of the hour or two we wasted on the wrong person. but that's all bad first dates are: short stories. good first dates are more than short stories. they are first chapters. on a good first date, everything is springtime. and when a good first date becomes a relationship, the springtime lingers. even after it's over, there can be springtime.
Two Awkward Stories
You never want to have a movie be derivative, because that's the worst if you ask me. i always want to be in original material, or an original idea, or an original vision, rather than a rehash of some other movie.
