Trying every day to tell the truth is hard. there are harder things, of course - arguably, living with lies and meaninglessness, living in despair is harder, but it's hardship disguised as luxury and easier perhaps to grow accustomed to, since truth is usually the enemy of custom. there are harder things than writing, being president obama, for instance, and having to deal with house republicans, or trying to fix the leak at the fukushima reactor, these are harder, but writing is hard.

Revenge is the concern of those who are at some point or other beaten. i am not beaten, i told myself. no, not beaten. and victory is far more interesting to contemplate than revenge.

Commonly, people believe that defeat is characterized by a general bustle and a feverish rush. bustle and rush are the signs of victory, not of defeat. victory is a thing of action. it is a house in the act of being built. every participant in victory sweats and puffs, carrying the stones for the building of the house. but defeat is a thing of weariness, of incoherence, of boredom. and above all of futility.

A hard-fought, well-fought, hairline-close game is as classical in sports as tragedy is in the theater. victory is contained within defeat, and defeat is contained within victory. that's the way it is in the best of games. what counts in sports is not the victory, but the magnificence of the struggle.

I've been in the sport of boxing for a long time, but i haven't been able to bring my 'a-game' totally out. i've beaten fighters with my 'c-game' and with my 'd-game,' but i haven't been able to beat anybody with my 'a-game.'

I think boxing is a singular sport, because the stakes are so high and because it just appeals to people's primal instincts. it's a life and death sport, and it's a sport of sacrifice. it's a humbling sport, and people are coming from humbling circumstances. it's always fun to watch a person that's come from nothing to having everything and losing it again.
