I have a hard time writing. most writers have a hard time writing. i have a harder time than most because i'm lazier than most. Public taste changes and the aesthetic of a culture changes over time, so the idea isn't to appeal to the aesthetic of the moment and what people will like right now; the idea is to somehow keep yourself in the public memory so that as taste evolves it will eventually come to embrace your thing. so, it's about writing to be remembered rather than writing to be liked.

I think it's the strength of her music, using art to make a statement. i think it really is. it was not a cheap gift. the gift was an expensive gift for nina [simone]. diamonds are expensive. her music was expensive. she paid for it, but i think it's her greatest gift.

I'm much better at fixing or changing a melody to suit me than i would a lyric. but for me, everything is lyric. it has to be true for me to say it.
