Israel is a fulfillment, and as a fulfillment, it is flawed. dreams fulfilled are imperfect. and, israel is imperfect, of course it is - a far cry from the monumental dreams of the founding fathers. one of the reasons is that their dreams were unrealistic. they were bigger than life. these were messianic dreams, dreams about total redemption for the jews, for the world. such dreams do not come true, not in their entirety.

I only have two kinds of dreams: the bad and the terrible. bad dreams i can cope with. they're just nightmares, and the end eventually. i wake up. the terrible dreams are the good dreams. in my terrible dreams, everything is fine. i am still with the company. i still look like me. none of the last five years ever happened. sometimes i'm married. once i even had kids. i even knew their names. everything's wonderful and normal and fine. and then i wake up, and i'm still me. and i'm still here. and that is truly terrible.

I love jazz. so to me, there are two main types of jazz. there's dancing jazz, and then there's listening jazz. listening jazz is like thelonius monk or john coltrane, where it's a listening experience. so that's what i like; i like to make stuff that you listen to. it's not really meant to get you up; it's meant to get your mind focused. that's why you sit and listen to jazz. you dance to big band or whatever, but for the most part, you sit and listen to jazz. i think it comes from that aesthetic, trying to take that jazz listening experience and put it on hip-hop.

I'm sure everyone feels sorry for the individual who has fallen by the wayside or who can't keep up in our competitive society, but my own compassion goes beyond that to those millions of unsung men and women, who get up every morning, send the kids to school, go to work, try to keep up the payments on their house, pay exorbitant taxes to make possible compassion for the less fortunate, and as a result have to sacrifice many of their own desires and dreams and hopes. government owes them something better than always finding a new way to make them share the fruit of their toils with others.

Deep listening is the kind of listening that can help relieve the suffering of another person. you can call it compassionate listening. you listen with only one purpose: to help him or her to empty his heart. even if he says things that are full of wrong perceptions, full of bitterness, you are still capable of continuing to listen with compassion. because you know that listening like that, you give that person a chance to suffer less.
