I felt like it was a courageous show [black-ish] from the beginning. we are a black family - we're not a family that happens to be black. but the show is not even about us being black. the show is about us being a family. that is groundbreaking - on tv, the black characters either happen to be black or they're the "black character," where everything they say is about being black. i think that's the genius.

What donald trump has been concerned about, what he`s talked about, is when we get deals that don`t level the playing field, when we get deals that aren`t the kinds of best deals we can get, we want good deals, and those are free trade deals to lower the barriers between trade between two countries.

White people scare the crap out of me. i have never been attacked by a black person, never been evicted by a black person, never had my security deposit ripped off by a black landlord, never had a black landlord, never been pulled over by a black cop, never been sold a lemon by a black car salesman, never seen a black car salesman, never had a black person deny me a bank loan, never had a black person bury my movie, and i've never heard a black person say, 'we're going to eliminate ten thousand jobs here - have a nice day!'

I think casting is really important. finding the right sensibility for the right part is an art in itself. if you're off there, you make it harder on yourself as a director. and it's fun to work that out with the actors. i don't think there's any magic to directing actors. it's very instinctual. working with actors is really one of my favorite creative moments of the whole process, and the most fun, because it's collaborative. i spend a lot of time rehearsing. i'm very rehearsal-oriented, probably because i have some background in theater. i like knowing what will work beforehand.

Producers - we always think, "well, producers are very powerful," but producers don't really have the power. it's the appearance they might, but they don't. even the actors don't. even the studio heads don't, because they're beholden to this corporation and what the corporation wants. so no one really has the power, and everybody's trying to get through the day, and everybody's nervous and desperate.

One wouldn't want to say that what makes a good writer is the number of books that the writer wrote because you could write a whole number of bad books. books that don't work, mediocre books, or there's a whole bunch of people in the pulp tradition who have done that. they just wrote... and actually they didn't write a whole bunch of books, they just wrote one book many times.
