I don’t think it would have all got me quite so down if just once in a while—just once in a while—there was at least some polite little perfunctory implication that knowledge should lead to wisdom, and that if it doesn't, it's just a disgusting waste of time! but there never is! you never even hear any hints dropped on a campus that wisdom is supposed to be the goal of knowledge. you hardly ever even hear the word 'wisdom' mentioned!

We hypostatize information into objects. rearrangement of objects is change in the content of the information; the message has changed. this is a language which we have lost the ability to read. we ourselves are a part of this language; changes in us are changes in the content of the information. we ourselves are information-rich; information enters us, is processed and is then projected outward once more, now in an altered form. we are not aware that we are doing this, that in fact this is all we are doing.

The endless cycle of idea and action, endless invention, endless experiment, brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness; knowledge of speech, but not of silence; knowledge of words, and ignorance of the word. all our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance, all our ignorance brings us nearer to death, but nearness to death no nearer to god. where is the life we have lost in living? where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? where is the knowledge we have lost in information? the cycles of heaven in twenty centuries bring us farther from god and nearer to the dust.

It is as to whether its services or uses are to be exchanged or not which makes a tool an article of capital or merely an article of wealth. thus, the lathe of a manufacturer used in making things which are to be exchanged is capital, while the lathe kept by a gentleman for his own amusement is not.

I think of the need for more wisdom in the world, to deal with the knowledge that we have. at one time we had wisdom, but little knowledge. now we have a great deal of knowledge, but do we have enough wisdom to deal with that knowledge?
