Architecture is art. i don't think you should say that too much, but it is art. i mean, architecture is many, many things. architecture is science, is technology, is geography, is typography, is anthropology, is sociology, is art, is history. you know all this comes together. architecture is a kind of bouillabaisse, an incredible bouillabaisse. and, by the way, architecture is also a very polluted art in the sense that it's polluted by life, and by the complexity of things.

I would consider directing. i think directing myself would be tough, but i'm definitely interested in directing. i might start off directing a play before i move to a film.

I'd known the people at rolling stone for a while. i'd gone to them with a piece i'd done on beirut for vanity fair that vanity fair didn't want to publish, because they said i was making fun of death... this was tina brown.but they paid me for it. so i've got this big chunk of a piece, and rolling stone liked it, but they thought it was a little dated. but then they called me back and asked me to do a similar piece about the turks and caicos islands, where the whole government had been arrested for dope smuggling. that was fun.

I feel like what we love to do is solve problems. if it's easy to solve, we find a more difficult one. there's always a way. in our world, we can build stuff. we can build more sets than you could ever build in live-action. we can build more props just for custom angles or perspectives. we'll build special trees for that, paint a sky. there's really no limitations, except that you run out of time and money at some point.

In fact, most of the time, people with similar information, similar beliefs and similar apparent choices will choose similar actions. so if you want to know why someone does what they do, start with what they know, what they believe and where they came from. dismissing actions we don't admire merely because we don't care enough to have empathy is rarely going to help us make the change we seek. it doesn't help us understand, and it creates a gulf that drives us apart.
